Finishing this dish with lime zest and juice brightens its rich flavors.

I Think It Snowed Twice In This Time

Last week Jeff was off with Isabelle for her Feb vacation. He took her and Harper to see his mom from Sunday to Wednesday. Originally we were all going to go over the long weekend but it was the exact time our tenants were moving in and out. I really wanted to be around to make sure they had a smooth transition. As it turned out I ended up working part of Saturday because I had been too sick to finish my grant. On Sunday I took Keegan to the NH Children's Museum for their family Mardi Gras celebration. We met up with Erika, Jay and Sammy. The boys had a great time with the beads, making masks and hats, listening to Cajun music and marching in the parade led by an alligator. I was exhausted because this cold has really taken the wind out of my sails. The next day I had a paid holiday but Keegan had school. Instead of taking a mommy day I decided to give him the day off too. We went to the planetarium, lunch, the movies and then dropped off a housewarming plant and bottle of wine for the new tenants. When we got home we spent a half an hour shooting off the foam rocket he had picked. Then our fingers got too cold and we had to stop.

This past Saturday Jeff took Isabelle back while I took Keegan and Harper to Sammy's birthday party. It was at an indoor children's play place in a old mill building. Keegan loved the climbing structure and bounce house while Harper had his own baby section. The age difference between them is extremely helpful in those situations. Keegan would check in with me as he changed locations and he knew to go to a grownup he knew if he needed help. Like when I was in the bathroom changing Harper and he had Erika bring him to the bathroom. We stayed way after the party ended until Harper was ready for nice long nap.

Keegan is off this week but I don't have enough leave to spend the week with him. We dropped him at my parent's house yesterday so he could stay over and spend the day there. Jeff picked him up on the way home. Tomorrow he and I will hang out. It might be too cold to do what I had planned so I'll have to come up with something else. He'll be at my parent's again Wed into Thurs and then I will be off with him on Friday when I have indoor fun scheduled.

Tomorrow is Mardi Gras and I have been missing NOLA so much lately. I have plans to go out with some girl friends and I am afraid Mexican is as festive as I could find for the occasion in NH. But we have made Chicken & Sausage Gumbo and Crab Cakes with Remoulade the past two nights to satisfy the cravings. Stirring a roux for 20 minutes always reminds of why I usually order gumbo out instead of making it at home. But it was worth it. This past week Jeff made Navy Bean Soup one night and Indian Cashew Chicken the next. It was so delicious paired with basmati rice and store bought naan we heated up.

For the record Jeff beat me at the Oscar ballot last night by two. Nothing sweetens up defeat like a bowl of homemade caramel corn. We actually stayed up for the whole thing. And after two weeks I finally feel better.
