Finishing this dish with lime zest and juice brightens its rich flavors.

Visions Of Sugar Plums

I am finally getting into the holiday spirit. Not because I am grumpy but because I feel like they came out of no where. Last year was the same because I was pregnant. This year because I am so busy. Tonight Keegan and I went to the kid's night at the paint your own pottery place. We met up with some of the Selfish Moms. Keegan did an ornament for himself and then one as a gift. I had wanted him to make more gifts but he so into detail now that it would have taken too long. As it was he was pretty tired when we got home.

The tree is all done and the paper chains surround the living room ceiling. We have a few other things out. I am guessing we'll finish up this weekend. Kids definitely bring the excitement back because everything is new and full of surprises. In between the lists for Santa we are trying to interject what the holiday season should be about. Giving, loving and hope. Telling them about kids and adults who don't have enough to eat or a place to sleep or clothes. Hard to fathom for kids who have never wanted for anything, except maybe an intact nuclear family.

I have a cookie swap at work on Thursday and Secret Santa next week as well as a holiday potluck. The decorating rules at work are so strict now I think people have given up and no one has decorated anything. Negative by-product of bureaucracy. Don't get me started on all of the other ones because of the budget crunch. I don't have a problem with any cost saving measure. I just don't get the ones that don't save state funds just because they think everyone should be treated the same. So I will not be spending federal money to do what I am grant required and they can't spend it anywhere else if I give back at the end of the year. Waste is what kills me. Frustrating lack of logic. This is why people run screaming from working for the government. I will have five years in next November. We'll see how long I last at this rate.

On a happier note I think I might have my mom lined up for a couple hours of babysitting next weekend so we can get shopping in. I want to buy local but most of the stores in town close fairly early on weeknights. Hopefully we can get most of it done when we are kid free. Hard to do the Santa thing when they are right in front of you. I also threw the whole nana watching our kids on NYE thing out there too. I will let her mull it over and hopefully she'll say yes. If not it is no biggie. We'll have plenty of kid free ones in our distant future. I dream of the day they are old enough for sleep overs...
