Finishing this dish with lime zest and juice brightens its rich flavors.

Moving Day

So it's over. We're in the house but not settled yet. We want to do things right which means more chores before stuff gets completely unpacked. And with a vintage house there are plenty of small things to do. The move went well with the usual bumps and fun. The movers had actually moved the previous owners out the week before so they were very familiar with the new house. Which is how they knew we weren't getting a queen mattress in without a fight. So later that day when the mattress was being delivered we had them put it right through the second floor door. That was easy. Not so easy was getting the old couch down to the family room. It just didn't happen. So instead we had them put it in the garage and I sold it and the chair and ottoman to one of the movers. He picks it up tonight. The painter was done with the bedrooms on Friday night but the dining room needed another coat on Saturday morning (got to have my red room!). That was accomplished while we were moving out of the other house. The kids love their new rooms and all the space and have adapted surprisingly well.  I think they sleep better there than I do. Although I must say the new bed is heaven. The bedframe and bedroom furniture comes tomorrow. But the plush mattress, featherbed and new sheets already make the perfect nest for my pregnant body. And you can budget for the move with the best of them but inevitably you spend more than you think because so many things come up. Isabelle picked out her new sheets and comforter and then they both got lamps and with hardwood floors also got super cute soft area rugs.

On Monday Jeff and are were both off from work and kidless so we bought a new family room couch that we hope does fit. And went to the unfinished furniture store for a cubbie bench for the mudroom and a bookshelf for Keegan. And what is the deal with the utilities? They all charge a fee to switch and it is not like they do anything. Except the phone guy who came and told Jeff how to wire the line himself and saved us $150. Or the cable guy who climbed the pole and flicked the switch that turned off the free cable we did have down to the basic cable we ordered. The final immediate need was getting the dogs settled. They have been at the kennel since before the move. We had to setup a place for them downstairs during the daytime. Matsi will be in a giant crate but Pepper has started to lose bladder control in her old age. It is too cruel to expect her to hold it the entire time we are at work. So we created a pen for her and I put down those puppy pads so she has options and still a clean space. I pick them up tonight and we will see how it goes tomorrow. After the snow melts they will have a nice yard to play in.

I promise pics after we get things in order. I am afraid now all you would get are pictures of boxes. Also my computer is not setup yet because the office is low on the list right now. And for so many reasons I really wish I wasn't flying out on Sunday. I would much rather keep moving in. But tomorrow night we should be in our new bed and unpacking our clothes and watching tv from a new sofa. One day at a time.
