Her Right Foot

Today my Mom had foot surgery and I was her driver. It is a role I held previously about 12 years ago. You see, the men in my family are not exactly "good" with hospitals. Tom turns green at the vet. My former Army Dad is practically useless what with all the pacing he does the whole time. It's a good thing my parents had atleast one girl. (I can hear my two brothers grumbling now.) So I took Mom in and waited for her to come out of recovery, dropped off her pain prescriptions and got her settled at home. The bonus is that she will be off from work for the next two weeks. I have all sorts of mother/daughter activities planned. Chick flicks, shopping, making curtains for the nursery.
The nurses today made a comment that I am a good daughter. My Mom agreed but I was thinking what is the big deal? Isn't this what children are supposed to do? I couldn't possible count the sacrifices my parents made for us. How many broken bones, stitches and illnesses did they get us through? This is what family does. You help out and be supportive when needed, end of story. And hey if you happen to get to snatch a little quality time with your way too busy Mom, that's just the gravy.

See, the difference is that not everyone is aware of or even thinks about the sacrifices that their parents made for them. I have seen, even in my own family, people who are NOT good daughters or sons. They are only there for them when it's convenient. It's sad really.

It's so nice what you are doing for your Mom! I hope her recuperation is an easy one!
