Make Lemonade

I was thinking the other week about the idea of courage and heroes. I feel like the media often tells us who are our heroes and in turn we don't hear about the people who's stories aren't glamorous.
So this morning I was moving through my usual routine which includes watching the "Today" show. Some of the time I tune out the segments because they are either too trivial or too heavy. I need something light & fluffy to start my day. (Which explains why I keep watching "Regis & Kelly" too.) This week they are doing a series called "Against the Odds." Today's story was about a nice young guy who married to his pretty folk singer girlfriend. They had a baby named Leah and they brought her to see mom's band play. Until they realized their mellow child was deaf. So mom lost interest in music and focused on teaching her sign language. Then they got pregnant with another little girl. And they found out she needed surgery to remove water on her brain. After Lucy was born she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Doctors told them she would be considered retarded and they wouldn't be able to prove otherwise. So they taught this baby sign too. Then they got this great idea to teach both deaf and hearing kids to sign. So mom returned to music and wrote songs and created a video series. It stars her daughter Leah and her sister's son Alex. They are the cutest videos. See their story for yourself. I found it really inspiring. I mean talk about having a lot thrown at you and coming out the other side with a gift to share.
